Ottawa football fans are experiencing both short-term and long-term excitement about the CFL these days.

Sunday night’s championship comes at a time when the capital region is rife with speculation over Ottawa’s future team and its potential name and players, to name a few.

Fans who didn’t make the trip to Toronto for the league’s 100th Grey Cup game said they were ready for a good night.

“I'd like Toronto to win because they're the host city and they haven't won in a little while,” said Steve Dubeau, expressing an opinion most Ottawa hockey fans wouldn’t echo.

“We have a whole bunch of reservations coming in for the game today, we also have some prizes,” said Angelina Motta of St. Louis Bar and Grill on Elgin Street.

Former Ottawa Rough Rider Mark Kosmos said he can remember what it was like to win the championship with his team in the 1970s, (’73 and ’76 to be specific.)

“We had fantastic fans, and the fans make the game,” he said. “If you don't have fans you might as well shut the doors down, but the fans make it worthwhile.”

Future supporters of Ottawa’s expansion team, set to begin play in 2014, said they’re excited for the chance to play in and host a Grey Cup once again.

“I think it's great, I think the new location will be wonderful, get the community out there to the stadium,” said Jeremy Cochrane. “It will work out well with the community in general.”

“If you bring players in that understand they should be keeping fans happy, every time they go onto the field they're giving 100 per cent . . . the fans will come,” said Kosmos.

A dream scenario for many fans would be to host the Grey Cup in 2017, which would coincide with Canada’s 150th birthday, but nothing is set in stone just yet.

The Grey Cup airs at 6 p.m. on TSN.
