One person is in hospital after a construction crane collapsed in southeast Ottawa Wednesday afternoon.

Ottawa police said they were called to the corner of Walkley Road and St. Laurent Boulevard around 2:45 p.m., where a 45-year-old male worker in the crane’s boom had been injured.

Paramedics said the man was working in the smaller, wheeled crane's basket when it fell about 30 feet to the ground; he has broken legs and was taken to hospital in serious condition.

"One of the workers was atop a cherry picker-type devide that's used to move the worker up alongside a wall," said JP Trottier of Ottawa Paramedic Services.

"We believe the system may have failed, the hydraulic system may have failed."

The Ministry of Labour has taken over the investigation from police.
