Ottawa police say a 74-year-old woman has died after the car she was driving collided with a bus carrying dozens of high school students.

Police tweeted that the driver succumbed to her injuries at the site of the crash on Highway 174, which took place shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday. She was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

Ottawa fire services say they were called to the scene around 2:40 p.m. upon hearing reports that someone had been ejected from a vehicle in the crash.

City spokeswoman Danielle Cardinal says those reports proved unfounded, but says paramedics did have to remove the driver who was trapped in the vehicle.

Ottawa Police say the male driver of the school bus was taken to hospital with a minor injury to his hand. None of the students on board received any serious injuries.

A spokesperson with the Ottawa Carleton District School Board says the bus was carrying 55 students and staff from Lisgar Collegiate Institute.

Ottawa Police closed the 174 in both directions for several hours Monday afternoon. By Monday evening the road had been re-opened.

The name of the deceased has not been released.
