Ottawa’s famous winter celebration, Winterlude, is preparing for a mild blast of spring.

The attractions, including the skateway, are open Friday, but the weekend forecast might have organizers changing plans.

So far the warm weather has already postponed the annual Winterlude triathlon until February 6th.

If, as expected, temperatures do go above 0 degrees, Winterlude will be forced to close some attractions like some of the slides at Snowflake Kingdom.

“So anything under 0 would be ideal for us, but I mean regardless of the weather, we have our three official sites plus 50 programming partners holding events across Ottawa and Gatineau, some are inside, some are outside,” said Katherine Cyr, spokesperson for Canadian Heritage.

Some of the sculptors from the ice sculpture competition said they were preparing for a warm weekend.

“If it is going to be in the plus Sunday and it’ll start to melt and collapse and of course we’ll start to make our construction the way where it can survive,” said Karlis Ile, a competitor from Latvia.

Sections of the Rideau Canal are still open. As of Saturday, a 6.7 kilometre stretch, between Bronson Avenue Bridge and Hartwells Locks, including Dows Lake will be open.
