Whole Foods faces four charges under the Ontario Retail Business Holiday Act for opening its Lansdowne Park store on Good Friday.

The charges against the high-end grocery store were laid by Ottawa Police following a complaint launched by a resident.

The fine for a first offence under provincial law is $500.

Fines for repeat offences can reach up to $50 thousand.

Whole Foods states it opened its doors on Good Friday under the premise Lansdowne Park was a tourist area exempt under the retail holiday law.

In Ottawa, the exemptions granted by City Council only appy to the Byward Market area and Sparks Street.

A court date has been scheduled for May 21, 2015.
