It is a day that is supposed to celebrate the love of two people but that fairy tale went sour at one wedding in Hamilton, Ontario. A gift from one guest at that wedding has become the subject of a major debate that has gone viral.

The bride wasn't impressed and responded by text to the guest:

"I lost out on $200 covering you and your dates plate… and got fluffy whip and sour patch kids in return. Just a heads-up for the future."

Wedding planner, Amanda O’Reilly of Weddings InStyle, agrees that the gift probably wasn’t appropriate but neither was the bride’s response.

“A gift is not a price of admission to a wedding,” says O’Reilly.

A recent survey by American Express showed that wedding guests in the US spend, on average, 108 dollars on a gift. That cost spikes to almost 180 dollars if the bride or groom is a close family member.

“A wedding is a celebration of a union it’s not like... let’s see how much cash I can make at my wedding. I think people need to remember why they are attending the wedding, and the couple in this case, needs to remember why they got married in the first place.”

CTV's Natalie Pierosara will have more on this story tonight at six.
