It was a wild weather weekend in the Capital, with fluctuating temperatures, heavy rain, humidity, and a cold front.

Environment Canada says that wacky weather will give way to a warmer than usual summer, after the month of May saw widely variable temperatures.

“I've never seen a month in Ottawa where you've had a 30 degree temperature with frost following it,” said Dave Phillips, Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada.  “Yesterday temperatures got up to 29 degrees, a 36 (degree) humidex and temperatures 8 degrees warmer than normal, and today, my gosh, the cold front has come in, and we've seen temperatures that are 9 degrees colder than normal.”

On Saturday, powerful rain storms swept through the region, downing some trees in the areas and leading to power outages.

Phillips says despite the wacky weather, overall, May has been warmer than usual, with about 24 of the 31 days above typical temperatures.

And he says the summer is shaping up to be the same way.

“We think the flavour of this particular summer season will be good for drinking beer on outdoor patios,” Phillips said. “We think come Labour Day, when we crunch the numbers, if our models are right, it will be certainly a warmer than normal summer, better than last year, and hopefully will get us forgetting those last two winters which were pretty tough.”
