The Ottawa Police were out busting drivers illegally using a bus lane and there were plenty of them.

In just a span of two hours, the blitz at the intersection of Heron Rd. and Riverside Dr. resulted in 130 tickets issued.

“They see it as an open lane, there are no buses coming. So you know what? There's a lot of traffic backed up so I'm going to take my chances and scoot ahead,” says Const. T.J. Jellinek of the Ottawa Police.

A video of the traffic issue was first posted on YouTube by Corey Reynolds. The video was taken during the Monday morning rush hour.

“Hey @ChiefBordeleau @OC_Transpo @JimWatsonOttawa what do you think?” The post asks Ottawa’s Police Chief and Mayor in the video description.

Thursday morning, Sgt. Mark Gatien tweeted:

“Getting lots of complaints about drivers using the bus lane on Heron coming up to Prince of Wales W/B.  Heads up, we are out in force there.”

Still, many didn’t get the message. A group of eight police officers handed out 40 tickets in just the first half-hour. Each ticket comes with a $175 fine.

Some drivers say with the ongoing traffic issue in the area, a dedicated bus lane is not the answer.

“We waited two years for these bridges to be fixed only to lose one-third of the lanes. When I sit on this road every morning, I see maybe one bus go by,” says Dave Power.

Ottawa Police say the bus lanes are necessary to keep OC Transpo on schedule. They also say people using the lanes inappropriately could cause a serious collision.

“If all of a sudden they decide it's full and they pull into that bus lane, that bus could be moving along at 60 km/h and all of a sudden you have a collision,” says Const. Jellinek.

Sgt. Gatien warning drivers Ottawa Police will be back.
