A suspicious package delivered to the Department of National Defence headquarters Thursday afternoon contained elements of an improvised explosive device.

Ottawa Police Inpector Michael Maloney say an X-ray was used to determine the elements of the package.

A special chemical, biological, nuclear and explosives team was sent to the scene to handle the package.

"There was never any risk to the public', stated Inspector Maloney.

Defence Minister Peter Mackay also issued a statement regarding the incident.

"The suspicious package was removed by a robot and detonated.  No one was injured', stated Mackay in an email.

The package forced the complete shut down of  the Mackenzie King Brige during the busy afternoon rush hour.

The bridge is a major transit hub for cross city and express OC Transpo buses.

OC Transpo reported delays Thursday afternoon of up to 40 minutes.

The RCMP is leading the investigation.
