It was a successful start to open the NHL season for the Ottawa Senators as they edged the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 in their season opener.

The top line of Kyle Turris, Mike Hoffman and Mark Stone, provided most ofl the offence for the Senators. Turris scored 2 goals. He almost made it a hat trick but hit the post in the third period.

The Senators faced former teammate Robin Lehner, who had to leave the game in the 2nd period with an undisclosed injury on an innocent looking play. Chad Johnson took over in nets for the Sabres.

Sabres first round draft pick Jack Eichel didn’t disappoint, as he scored the Sabres lone goal. It was his first career NHL goal as the Sabres trailed 2-1.

About a minute later Evander Kane appeared to tie it up. The Senators would take advantage of the new NHL rule, as Dave Cameron challenges the goal. Video review showed it was offside. The goal was disallowed.

Curtis Lazar added an empty netter as the Senators win 3-1.

Craig Anderson made 27 save for the victory.

The Senators visit Toronto Saturday then host the Montreal Canadiens Sunday in their homeopener.
