The Ottawa Senators squeaked out a 2-1 victory in a shootout over Detroit keeping them alive in the playoff race.

The Senators set the pace in the first period dominating the Red Wings outshooting Detroit 13-5 after one period. Former Ottawa 67’s goalie Petr Mrazek kept the Senators off the scoreboard with several great saves.

6 minutes into the 2nd period, the Red Wings take advantage of a bad turnover by Kyle Turris. Gustav Nyquist beats Andrew Hammond giving Detroit a 1-0 lead, despite Ottawa outshooting Detroit 25-9 after 2 periods.

With just 4 minutes left in regulation, Clarke MacArthur finally beats Mrazek with the 33rd shot on goal, the screen provided by Mark Stone to tie the game at 1.

It was forced into a shootout, and fittingly it’s Mark Stone who was robbed all night, who wins it for the Senators 2-1. The victory allows the Senators to keep pace with the Boston Bruins as Ottawa remains 3 points back of the Bruins for the final playoff spot in the East.

The Senators host the Lightning Thursday.

Injury note: Red Wings winger Drew Miller, suffered 2 deep lacerations to his face after accidentally getting cut by Mark Stone’s skate.
