Ottawa Senators star centre Jason Spezza will require back surgery which could put him out of action for the rest of the regular season.

Spezza has a herniated disc that usually takes up to 8 weeks to recover after surgery.

Ottawa Senators General Manager Bryan Murray is hoping Spezza could be back on the ice for a play-off run.

Spezza has had back problems in the past and felt more pain in Sunday's 2-1 loss against Pittsburg.
