PERTH, Ont. -- A 63-year-old man has died in hospital after complaining of shortness of breath in a police cell in eastern Ontario.

The province's police watchdog says the man was arrested on Monday in a Kemptville, Ont., park and taken to hospital.

The Special Investigations Unit says he was released on Monday night and taken to the provincial police detachment in Perth, Ont., where he was put in a cell.

The SIU says he was taken to hospital in Smiths Falls, Ont., on Wednesday morning after complaining of shortness of breath.

The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
