MISSISSAUGA, Ont. -- A man pulled from an Ottawa river Saturday was wanted by police in the shooting death of a man who tried to get his cellphone back in London, Ont., the province's police watchdog said Tuesday.
The Special Investigations Unit identified the body as 23-year-old Muhab Sultany Sultan from Calgary, who allegedly ran from police into the Rideau River last week, where he fell under and never surfaced.
Police said Sultan tried to run down two officers on bicycles with a car last Wednesday, which led to a chase that ended near the river when two suspects jumped from the vehicle. One was arrested, but Sultan allegedly escaped into the water and tried to swim across the river.
Police divers searched throughout Thursday and Friday, but Sultan's body wasn't recovered until a passerby spotted him floating near a bridge on Saturday morning .
Sultan was facing a warrant for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 18-year-old Jeremy Cook, who was killed June 14 after tracking his cellphone to a car with three men inside, parked in the north end of London. Police said Cook tried to retrieve his phone, and was shot multiple times when he grabbed the car as it began to drive away.
Police are still trying to identify two other suspects, who investigators say fled the scene after the car drove away and collided into a fence and a telephone pole.
London police called the case "extreme," and said the incident was likely the city's first case of serious violence stemming from tracking down a missing phone.
The SIU is called in to investigate reports involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
