A stretch of downtown Ottawa’s Rideau Street is open again after a gas line was cut by construction workers.

Marc Messier of Ottawa Fire Services said in a tweet five buildings on Rideau Street between Nelson Street and Friel Street were evacuated after the “high-pressure” line was cut around 11:30 a.m.

He later said the leak has been isolated and people were being allowed back in.

Ottawa police closed Rideau Street between King Edward Avenue and Chapel Street to both vehicles and pedestrians because of the leak.

The road was re-opened around 1:30 p.m.
