Ottawa's world famous Rideau Canal Skateway opens for the 2013 season Friday morning. The National Capital Commission announced a 2.2 km stretch from the Bank Street Bridge to Pretoria Bridge will be open at 7a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013.
The skating season usually begins in early January. Last year, the canal was open for skating for just 28 days.
The NCC estimates more than 440 thousand people either walked, ran, took a sled or skated on the canal in 2012. The NCC brands the Rideau Canal as the World's Largest Skateway.
