The Rideau Canal has closed following its shortest season on record.

The winter's wacky weather wreaked havoc on the canal, closing it for 16 of 34 days. The canal was only open for 18 skating days, the lowest since 2001-2002 when the canal's green flag was flying for just 26 skating days.

"Adverse weather conditions have deteriorated the ice surface and, in some places, ice thickness," the National Capital Commission said in a media release.

"Water on the ice surface may hide serious hazards. The NCC urges the public to keep personal safety in mind and remain off the Skateway, as it is now closed."

The Rideau Canal's 46 season started on January 23, 2016. It was open for two of three weekends of Winterlude.
