Parks Canada is hoping to reopen the Rideau Canal for boat traffic within 24 to 48 hours.

Most of the canal was closed Tuesday afternoon due to high water levels.

In a statement, the government agency said that “in order to ensure a safe and navigable waterway, Parks Canada announces a temporary closure of the majority of the canal while necessary adjustments are made."

The Ottawa, Newbork and Narrows lock stations are the only three lock stations still open.

Ottawa received 79 mm of rain on Monday, while the Kingston area saw 100 mm of rain.

Parks Canada says with sun and warmer temperatures in the forecast, “the weather looks good for the upcoming days, we hope to fully reopen within 24-48hrs”

Boaters are being asked to stay moored until further notice.
