Ottawa could be seeing slot machines in more areas as a way to slay Ontario's deficit.

One of the recommendations in the massive Drummond Report on the province's finances is to allow slot machines at venues other than racetracks.

Right now the revenue from the slots at the Rideau Carleton Raceway is split between the track and the province, with a portion going to the City of Ottawa.

The report recommends stopping that sharing of revenue and putting slot machines in different places.

"It does really well for us right now, we do get a steady streams of funds from that for the taxpayer," said Ottawa councillor Rick Chiarelli. "Put it in the baseball stadium so when double-A (baseball) isn't playing, people go there on the wrong night and they'll have something to do."

Other location ideas from people in the streets included Scotiabank Place, Sparks Street and the Byward Market.

"If it will brighten up Sparks Street, a few slot machines here and there maybe wouldn't be a bad idea for the people who enjoy it," said Kendra Morley.

"There are people who gamble everything away, their homes, the whole nine yards so I don't think they should be everywhere," said another citizen. "Go to Las Vegas if you want a slot machine everywhere."

Ottawa Centre Liberal MPP Yasir Naqvi said it's too soon to speculate about adding more slot machines.

"We have to be mindful, if any decisions will be made, will be in consultation with the city," he said. "City government will have a big say in that."

It's still unknown how much of the Drummond Report the province will include in its budget, which will be tabled next month.
