Even microbiologist Jason Tetro was surprised to discover what kind of germs lurked on some of the most commonly used places.

"I think what was the surprise was just how much was picked up."

Tetro says a safe surface carries 600 to 1000 bacteria on average. The swabs CTV Ottawa's Catherin Lathem used for this test found 5,000 to 10,000.

Ranking highest:

  • Steering wheel – E. Coli and other fecal bacteria (can cause stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhea)
  • Keyboard – pseudomonas (can cause infection to wounds)
  • ATM machine – pseudomonas and yeast (yeast can cause thrush and yeast infection)
  • Money - pseudomonas (can cause infection to wounds)
  • Newspapers – pseudomonas and fecal bacteria

Ranking lowest:

  • Gas pump (reasoning: out in the open – rain, snow, and sun make it hard for bacteria to live on)

While some bacteria are helpful and can help boost one's immune system, others can be deadly.

Tetro says the best way you can protect yourself is through good hygiene.
