A man in his 40’s is recovering in hospital after a violent attack in downtown Ottawa last night.

Police say the incident started at a restaurant on Rideau between Sussex and Dalhousie, then continued into the street.

Officers say it appears between 10 to 20 people were involved in the assault.

“The victim appeared to be by himself, and the other people, the assailants for a lack of a better term, were known to each other,” says Sgt. Mark Patterson.

“Whatever the altercation was, it carried out to the street and they were the ones involved in the actual assault.”

The victim was unconscious when police arrived, but police say his injuries are not life-threatening.

Police say a full investigation is underway.
