Energy company Plasco has successfully completed operational and environmental testing at its Trail Road plant in the city's west-end.

The facility, which has been in operation since January 2007, began as a pilot project to turn waste into energy. The plant uses high heat and converts 400 tonnes of garbage a day into 20 megawatts of energy, enough to power 7, 000 homes.

Plasco said it will now apply for a new operating certificate under the Ontario Ministry of the Environment's Waste Management Projects Regulation. The new certificate will allow the plant to operate permanently.
