Some patios that were part of a pilot project on Elgin Street in 2013 are here to stay.

City council approved patios for Hooley’s Pub, Town, the Standard and Johnny Farina. It had previously approved patios for places like Woody’s and Fresco Bistro Italiano.

Some people are concerned the patios will encroach on sidewalk space, making it difficult for people in wheelchairs or pushing strollers to get by.

Currently, the city requires sidewalks to be 1.8 metres in width.

Some establishments also had concerns about fees to have a patio, which are among the highest in the country.

The mayor said the city would work with establishments and BIA with respect to the fees, but said they had already been lowered over the past few years.
