The National Capital Commission is set to kick off the Rideau Canal's new skating season on New Year's Day.

Two kilometres of the canal will be open to skaters between Pretoria Bridge and Bank Street Bridge, with the exception of the rest area at Patterson Creek.

Officials say ice in the area has reached the required thickness of 30 centimetres. Other sections of the canal will open when ice conditions are also safe for skaters.

The NCC is warning residents and tourists to stay off areas that are still closed.

This will be the Rideau Canal's 39th skating season.
