Ottawa parents were making last minute plans as more than 23 hundred public elementary teachers got their picket signs ready for a one day walk-out on Wednesday. The teachers union is protesting Bill 115 which freezes wages, bans strikes, and reduces sick day compensation.

One Ottawa parent says the one day walkout will affect her family budget.

“ We have to pay for the sitter, if I chose to take the time off, then I’d be using vacation time or take it off unpaid”, said Whitney Bond.

A number of community organizations are hoping to fill the void with special one day programming.

They include hockey camps, dance schools and and community centres.

The strike will force the closure of 117 schools leaving more than 48 thousand children without classes tomorrow.

Teachers will set up picket lines at about 70 schools throughout the city.
