It is a new initiative aimed at creating safe, future drivers.  Ottawa police and local school boards are partnering on a new education program.

it's part of the Leave the Phone Alone (LTPA) distracted driving campaign.  Organizers say it should benefit both students, who will soon be behind the wheel, and their families.

Sergeant Denis Hull, who coordinates teh LTPA program says "We are reaching students before they become drivers, to ensure they never develop the habit of texting and driving."

Two school kits have been created  to teach students about the dangers of distracted driving.

The program will be intrroduced at the Ottawa Catholic School Board and move into other boards over the next two years.

At the program launch on February 2nd, Grade 5 students from  two different schools will be invited to take a pledge not to text and drive.
