Friends of Devon LaFleur of Ottawa confirm he was shot dead by police in Toronto following a confrontation Friday night.

According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, there was a confrontation in the North York area of Toronto Friday night and several officers fired their weapons. They say a 30-year-old man was shot and pronounced dead in hospital.

Police have not released the man's identity but friends confirm the victim is LaFleur and say he had a history of mental illness.

On Friday night, Ottawa Police had issued a news release saying LaFleur was missing and may have been armed.

On Saturday morning, police sent out another release confirming LaFleur had been found but did not offer any other details.

The SIU is called in whenever there is a report of serious injury or death involving police officers.
