The largest online ride-sharing company in Ontario has been told car pooling is illegal.
PickupPal Online Incorporated could well be shut down in October.
The company matches drivers and riders on its website.
Its operators have been asked to appear before the Ontario Highway Transportation Board.
Bus company Trentway-Wager filed a complaint with the board, claiming the online service is violating several safety regulations that the rest of the industry must meet.
"Every time two people double-up, that's one less car on the road. That's decreased congestion, seven percent of an average person's household CO2 emissions are from transportation daily," said Eric Dewhirst, of PickupPal Online.
Dewhirst said it's time the Ontario Government change outdated carpooling laws. given that it has spent billions building carpooling lanes.
