A 26-year-old man is in hospital after being shot in the chest at a house party in Gatineau early Sunday morning.

Police were called to 34 Rue Cartier around 3 a.m. after reports of shots fired. When they arrived, officers found the victim on the ground. He was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

Police said there were about 25 people inside the residential home for a private party.

Rue Cartier was blocked off Sunday as officers investigated. The Canine Unit and Tactical Team were called in to find the suspect, who police say fled on foot.

The shooting came as a big shock for residents in the area who called the neighbourhood a peaceful place to live.

"I've been living here my whole life, so 50 years, and it is very quiet, I'm very surprised," said Sonia Latour.

Police set up a command post at a nearby shopping plaza. They were seen doing interviews throughout the day.

"Other than rush hour traffic we never have any problems, so I’m not exactly sure what happened, I heard some kids saying it was a birthday party or something that had gone bad," said Chris Weed, who lives in the area.

The investigation is ongoing.
