A 60-year-old woman is dead after she was hit by a car Sunday while crossing Montreal Road in a wheelchair.

Around 11:45 p.m. Sunday, Ottawa Police Service along with the Ottawa Paramedics and Ottawa Fire Services, responded to a collision between a car and a woman in a motorized wheel chair near the intersection of Montreal Rd and Elwood St.

Police said bystanders, including a doctor with the Montfort Emergency Department performed CPR until emergency services arrived. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ottawa Police said alcohol was not a factor. The investigation is ongoing.

Many residents in nearby long-term care and shared living facilities argue the intersection is dangerous.

"It's scary. I was really frightened coming across," said Claire Langdon after getting stuck in the middle of the intersection in her wheel chair.

According to Langdon, many of her neighbors have a difficult time reaching the other side of the street before the light changes.

Other residents who spoke to CTV Ottawa shared similar concerns, some saying the vehicles on Montreal Rd are often going above the speed limit.

"The cars are very fast on this street," said one resident.

Concerns exist among drivers, too, who said jaywalking is becoming increasingly more common. Just last week, Heather Gordon swerved to avoid a woman in a wheelchair.

"It was pretty scary for us. She looked right at us and still went ahead and brought her wheelchair in front of our car," she said.

"We had to break and swerve our car. With my kids in the car, I thought this is a tragedy. This is going to happen."

It still remains unclear exactly what led to the incident. Police have not said whether speed was a factor or whether the pedestrian was crossing against the light.
