The heat warning is taking a toll on everyone- especially the city's most vulnerable.

The staff and volunteers at the Ottawa Mission are making extra efforts to help people who are homeless. The foot patrol has been extending their hours to make sure enough water is being handed out. They says over 150 bottles are handed out on especially hot days.

"We go and hand out water to guys who are sitting outside and make sure they are staying hydrated," says Mikel Thomas who manages the foot patrol program. "If there are any first-aid emergencies we are all trained- so we make sure we call the ambulance or treat them ourselves."

Peter Tilley is the Executive Director of the Ottawa Mission. "We have more movies running during the week, so people can come in and watch television- we have put on special other treats for people, popsicles and whatever we can do to encourage them to come inside."

In addition every Wednesday, the Mission hosts Cool Down Days where people can play bingo in the air-conditioned lounge and enjoy cool treats like popsicles.

Tilley also says there is a focus on educating those on the streets about the signs of heat stroke and the importance of drinking enough water.
