The investigation continues into the cause of a fire that destroyed a century-old NCC farmhouse Monday night.

The Ottawa Fire Service said they received multiple calls around 7:25 p.m. reporting smoke and flames coming from the house at 305 Robertson Road, between Bells Corners and Kanata.

They said it took 12 vehicles and 45 firefighters almost two and a half hours to extinguish the blaze.

It was made more difficult because the nearest fire hydrant was unusually far away, and crews had to be pulled out when the conditions became too dangerous.

"The fire burned through the floor, (made) holes in the floor," said Jim Bloom, district chief with the Ottawa Fire Service. "We set up a large water supply to knock the fire down then sent crews back in."

Damage is estimated at half a million dollars, and crews remained on scene overnight to test for hot spots.

Ottawa police closed Robertson Road from 7:30 p.m. to around 11:45 p.m.
