The winter mix of snow, salt and the brine used to make it safer for drivers in Ottawa are wreaking havoc on vehicles.

“It’s just doing a lot of damage to the vehicle on the electrical system, on the body work, on the paint,” said Danny Pantuso of Pantuso Automotive.

One of the best options to protect your vehicle is with a car wash.

A number of people were lining up at Tops Car Wash on Richmond Road in order to rid their vehicles of winter’s remnants, if only temporarily.

“We have many customers who wash weekly, we have customers who wash daily,” said Keith Henry, president of Tops Car Wash.

“We’ve had cars that were rusted out underneath and so we wanted to protect this one,” said Velma MacKay while waiting for her vehicle.

The Ministry of Transportation said over the last two winters more than 10,000 tonnes of salt and 100,000 litres of brine.

“It’s important for safer road conditions, I think it’s good that way but it’s not good for your car,” said Marcel Lapensee who was getting his car washed.

Experts say washing your car regularly may prolong its longevity and end up saving drivers money.
