It was a proper send-off for a Canadian soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice.

For the family of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, it was a chance to say their first goodbyes.

Cirillo’s mother Kathy and other loved ones coming to the Ottawa funeral home where his body was held. It was the first time she would see her son since his tragic death.

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders would also help bring their fellow reservist home. A ceremonial procession held in Cirillo’s honour as his body would begin the journey back to Hamilton.

For members of the crowd who would gather at the funeral home, it was an opportunity to pay their respects and support a family who lost a loved one too soon.

“I want them to know they are not alone. That they have Canadians supporting them,” said Kimberly Leclair.

Her son Nicholas would later come holding a large Canadian flag.

“Through this tragedy we are still united stronger than ever. And we are here to support our men and women who serve in the armed forces of Canada,” he said.

As the motorcade including members of the Ottawa Police, RCMP and Hamilton Argylls, the crowd offered an appreciative applause as Cpl. Cirillo made his way home.
