Ottawa police have charged a HIV-positive gay rights activist with aggravated sexual assault.

Police say the victim in this case is a 16-year-old boy, and they warn there could be other victims.

Police say the new charges stem from complaints they received from a 16-year-old boy. On Sunday night, they were called to the 200 block of St. Patrick St. in the Lowertown area.

They allege the 16-year-old male victim was sexually assaulted and extorted for an undisclosed amount of money.

Police have charged 33-year-old Elliott Youden with one count of aggravated sexual assault and one count of extortion.

In June, Youden was acquitted on a separate charge of aggravated sexual assault. In that case, he was accused of failing to disclose his HIV status to a sexual partner whom he met online.

Police believe there could be other victims, and they are urging anyone with information to contact them.

Youden is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Wednesday.
