An Ottawa family has escaped unharmed after a devastating earthquake on the Greek Island of Kos.

CEO of the St-Laurent Academy in Ottawa Bill Kokkaliaris and his family were on the island when the earthquake struck early this morning.

Kokkaliaris says there was a main earthquake around 1:30 a.m. local time Friday morning, followed by 20 aftershocks.

“It’s quite traumatic,” Kokkaliaris said as he described the 10 to 15 seconds of shaking.

The 6.5 magnitude earthquake rattled other islands and Turkey’s Aegean coast. At least two deaths have been reported.

Kokkaliaris told CTV Morning Live his family is camping out on lawn chairs in the hotel’s parking lot because they are afraid to go back inside. He says there are cracks in the foundation of the building.

The earthquake was so powerful that Kokkaliaris says half of the water in the pool of his Presidential Suite of the hotel was dumped out.

He says locals are worried there will be another major earthquake.

Kokkaliaris tells CTV Morning Live his family will be flying home today, one day ahead of schedule.
