Ottawa Police handed out 134 tickets Tuesday for distracted drivers texting or breaking other rules under the Ontario Highway Safety Act.

The one-day blitz was conducted in partnership with OPP and RCMP. "We were out since 8am," says Ottawa Police Traffic Sergeant Denis Hull. "Unfortunately, disappointing, it’s been almost non-stop, one car after another."

Hull says drivers may be aware of some dangers, like drinking and driving, but they may not realize that other behaviours and distractions also pose a threat to their safety. Many drivers who were pulled over were surprised that it is still illegal to use your cellphone even when stopped at traffic lights.

Andrew Carpentier was issued a ticket for distracted driving. "It's not legal anywhere, to be texting and driving, I understand that, but I was stopped, so i thought i would be alright," he says.

After receiving a ticket, he says he will think twice before texting a driving. He says, "I'll probably pull over and stop."

In 2013, 40% of collisions in Ottawa were the result of distracted driving.

Starting September 1st, the fine for distracted driving will go from $280 to $490 and will include 3 demerit points.
