Canadians will officially head to the polls on October 19th, following the longest election campaign in modern history.

On Sunday, August 2nd, Governor General David Johnston granted Prime Minister Stephen Harper's request to dissolve the 41st Parliament, triggering a federal election.

The election will be held on the fixed election date of October 19th, 2015. Harper said he is ready to start the campaign immediately.

In a speech announcing the election, Harper said the economy remains his party's number one priority.

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, Green Party leader Elizabeth May and Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe are expected to launch their campaigns later today.

More to come.
