A man is dead after his tractor trailer crossed into on-coming traffic on Highway 401 near Mallorytown early Thursday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police say the driver was travelling eastbound around 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, when his tractor trailer crossed the median into the westbound lanes, hitting a metal barrier and a rock embankment. The tractor trailer exploded on impact.

The driver of the truck was able to free himself from the trailer, and was assisted to a ditch by a passerby.

The man was transported to hospital in Brockville where he was pronounced dead.

No other vehicles were involved.

The highway has reopened. The OPP is investigating.

The victim's identity has not been released.
