BELLEVILLE, Ont. -- A 19-year-old man has been charged under the Rail Safety Act after a passenger train hit a car in Belleville, Ont., on Sunday afternoon.

Two people were hurt when a Via Rail train travelling from Ottawa to Toronto collided with a car at a private crossing around 3:45 p.m.

Belleville police say the driver of the car and his 18-year-old female passenger were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries. They have since been released.

The man, whose name has not been released, is charged with one count of failing to give way to rail equipment.

Via Rail says passengers continued the trip on shuttle buses. (CFRA)
