Nearly three weeks after a massive sinkhole swallowed up a portion of Rideau St. several roads have re-opened.

  • Vehicles and cyclists can now turn left onto Sussex from Rideau St.
  • Elgin St. northbound is re-open from Albert to Rideau streets.
  • Eastbound Wellington is open once again from Elgin to Rideau.
  • The closure northbound on Colonel By remains.

As well most sidewalks along Rideau have re-opened to Pedestrians. Monday afternoon construction crews removed the gates along Rideau St. and opened the crosswalk at William St. on Rideau.

City staff say all cross walks will officially open Tuesday.

“Those connections for the crosswalks and also for the cars is bringing back normalcy. You don’t have to think about getting into the market, it’s getting more and easier,” said Councillor Mathieu Fleury.

By Canada day Fleury says the city is hopeful Rideau will be open for crowds to walk the entire street.

“We’re waiting for the engineering stamp which gives safety access onto Rideau St. and that’s our primary concern is safety,” he said.

The city anticipates buses and taxis will be back on Rideau St. by July 2nd.

By Monday evening construction crews were no longer working on Rideau and you could see clearly down the St.

Mayor Jim Watson says the sinkhole has been paved and electrical work in being completed for transit lights.
