The Hull jail lockdown ended peacefully Wednesday evening after the 16 inmates who refused to go back into their cells surrendered to police.

Quebec Provincial Police brought in a team of negotiators who spoke to the inmates during the day.

The lockdown lasted more than 8 hours.

A tactical unit from Montreal was also on standby.

The inmates barricades themselves into the maximum security wing.

Police say there is major damage inside the jail with smashed furniture and debris scattered everywhere.
