The clock is ticking for residents in a housing complex in the city's south end to find another place to live before being evicted.
“Waiting for a house is very stressful,” said Heron Gate tenant Magda Ibrahim who, along with her husband and six kids, hasn’t found a place to live.
Landlord Timbercreek has told residents they have until Feb. 29, 2016 to leave their homes and find new ones. It plans on demolishing 80 townhouses in the housing complex and build low-rise apartment complexes.
Told about the reqiurement to vacate at the end of September, Timbercreek said five months notice is enough time for tenants to decide if they’re staying within the Heron Gate community or choosing to move elsewhere.
It said, as required through legislation, that it has to provide residents, regardless if they stay or go, with three months free rent. Timbercreek said it has also included a $1,500 moving allowance.
The group rallying Thursday said it wants the company to delay the forced move out until the end of June.
The company said in order to get a permit to demolish the buildings had to be vacant so pushing the move out date is not an option.
