The Carp Agricultural Hall is damaged but still standing after firefighters extinguished a blaze in the historic building Saturday.

Ottawa firefighters said they got calls reporting smoke and flames coming from the roof of the Carp Fairgrounds barn around 3:30 a.m Saturday.

They said a gas-fired wall heater started the fire on the wall, which spread upwards into the attic.

Damage was contained to the office and meeting rooms on the second floor, as well as the attic. The outside wall was also burnt, but the large wall mural wasn't harmed.

It's estimated the fire caused $100,000 in damage.

The Carp Fairgrounds' general manager was on hand to help fire crews remove equipment and valuables.

This September will mark the 149th edition of the Carp Fair.
