Ottawa Police say a man is facing a second degree murder charge in the death of his elderly mother.

Steven Mair was arrested Friday morning after his mother was pronounced dead inside a Sandy Hill apartment building near Range Rd.

Police were called to the apartment around 5:30 a.m. for a disturbance.

When they arrived Mair led them to the unit where the woman was located, according to Cst. Marc Soucy.

The woman, who has not been identified, had 'traumatic injuries', according to Ottawa Paramedics.

Witnesses say Mair was wearing little clothing at the time. They watched as he was strapped down to a stretcher and taken away by ambulance.

Paramedics say he was taken to hospital in stable condition. He was later arrested.

The Ottawa Police Major Crime Unit is investigating.
