Ottawa Police say a 78-year-old woman was pronounced dead in hospital after she was struck by a car in a Metro parking lot.

The incident happened around 3:15p.m. in the Metro parking lot on Beechwood, just east of the Vanier Parkway.

"Police, fire, and paramedics all attended - A 78-year old female was taken to the civic hospital at which point she was pronounced deceased." said Sgt. Brent Macintyre.

Paramedics say the woman was loading groceries into her vehicle when she was struck by a car. She was pinned between the two cars and suffered life-threatening leg injuries. The woman was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Police have confirmed the woman's identity but are not releasing her name as family members are still being notified.

Ottawa police had a portion of the parking lot tapped off Monday afternoon as part of their investigation. Inside were two vehicles - a red coloured Toyota and silver Lexus. It appears the woman was loading her groceries into the Toyota when the driver of the Lexus backed into her.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police say no charges have been laid.
