Three more kilometres of the Rideau Canal Skateway opened to skaters Thursday morning.

The National Capital Commission opened the Skateway from Bank Street to Dow's Lake at 8 a.m.

Workers took core samples of the ice at Dow's Lake Wednesday morning to determine whether it was thick enough for skating. Ice must be at least 30 centimetres thick before the canal can open to skaters.

A 2.4-kilometre stretch of the canal between Bank Street and the Pretoria Bridge opened over the weekend. Now, 5.8 kilometres of the Skateway are available to skaters.

CTV weather specialist J.J. Clarke said there is plenty of cold weather ahead to help ice conditions on the rest of the canal. Over the next couple of days, he says the daytime temperature is expected to be between -8 and -10 degrees Celsius.

The NCC says the rest of the Skateway will only open once ice conditions are deemed safe. They also remind residents to stay off closed sections of the canal.
