A 59-year-old cyclist was killed Wednesday morning after his bicycle collided with a pickup truck in the city's east end.
The collision happened on Innes Road at the corner of Bantree Street, near St. Laurent Boulevard.
Paramedics were called to the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday. When they arrived, the cyclist had no vital signs.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Yves Paquette witnessed the fatal collision.
"I told my guys watch out boys, there's an accident going to come and as soon as we looked at it, not even a blink of an eye, guy got hit,” said Paquette, who was on his way to work. “(He) hit the truck and we saw his head almost through the windshield.”
Over the past three years, there have been about 300 bicycle collisions in Ottawa every year.
Alex deVries of Citizens For Safe Cycling points out the number of cyclists is constantly rising.
He says it appears as though biking in the city is actually getting safer.
The male driver of the vehicle was not injured.
Innes Rd.was closed between St. Laurent Blvd. and Star Top Rd. for several hours following the accident.
It has since reopened.
