Eight people and organizations making a difference in Ottawa were honoured with Community Builder awards at the annual gala hosted by the United Way Thursday night.

Diane Morrison, the retired executive director of the Ottawa Mission, was presented with the Community Builder of the Year award.

Morrison started as a volunteer at the Mission and spent the past two decades supporting Ottawa’s homeless people.

Ottawa-Vanier MP Mauril Bélanger was recognized as a United Way Ambassador.

CFRA’S Rick Gibbons was presented with the Volunteer of the Year award.

The Turning Lives Around award was presented to Operation Come Home, an organization dedicated to preventing homeless young people from becoming homeless adults.

Hydro Ottawa, Public Works and Government Services Canada, Youville Centre and LiveWorkPlay also received Community Builder awards.

More than 700 people attended the 13th annual event held which was held at the Ottawa Convention Centre.
