One of the capital's biggest cycling events took over city streets Sunday.
Thousands took part in the 8th annual CN Cycle for CHEO. It is a major fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and raises money for pediatric cancer.
10-year-old Anna Afghan saved up her Christmas and birthday money to donate to the event.
“I thought it was so sad that other kids had to suffer through cancer and go to CHEO so I thought raising money would help them and their families,” said Afghan.
This year’s event brought in more than $950,000. That brings the event's total to more than $5 million since the event started eight years ago.
“People are always asking what can I do to help – this is something you can do to help, because by doing this, you’re helping to fund research that’s taking place at CHEO, you’re helping to fund the programs that support these families and you’re helping to purchase the equipment that’s needed,” said Kevin Keohane, President & CEO of the CHEO foundation.
The event was hosted by CTV’s own Graham Richardson.
“I do this every year, number one because I love to cycle myself, and number two, a lot of the kids are out actually riding and it’s such a celebration of life,” said Richardson.
Riding for the first time is 18-year-old cancer survivor Trevor Young.
“I do have a history which is why it gives me more reason to give back because I understand what goes on inside the walls at CHEO and I understand the miracles that can happen,” said Young.
Participants had the choice between a 70km, 35km, 15km cycle or 5km or 2km walk.
While cancer treatment has come a long way, sadly, many have lost their battle much too soon.
Sunday, balloons were released in honour of the children who have passed away.
